The School of Architecture was established in 1952 with the foundation of Chonnam National University. In 1994, it was changed to the Department of Architecture given its unique features and programs that overed the liberal arts as well as art.
The department was restructured, in 2002, into the School of Architecture with the aim of strengthening the professional and vocational skills of its students. Since then, the School of Architecture has provided a five year architecture course and four year architectural engineering course. The freshmen of the School
of Architecture need to decide their own major in the second semester of the first year after taking into full consideration the possible certification paths (KAAB and KEEBK).
Introduction
Chonnam National University’s School of Architecture ranked 8th in the Joongang Daily’s University Assessment conducted in 1996. It was also selected as an excellent School of Architecture (and engineering) by the Korean Council for University Education in 1999. Furthermore, the Biohousing Research Institute, where we played a central role, was selected as to receive the support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, over a period of 10 years from 2005, as part of the project to foster regional research bases. The Biohousing Research Institute, designed to develop original technology, which will boost the regional industries related to environmentally-friendly architecture, significantly increased its research capability, and the research of the institute has been incorporated into the undergraduate and graduate courses in order to reinforce the synergy between education and research.
Students at the School of Architecture currently use engineering college building II. The building was extended in 2007 through a generous donation by School of Architecture alumnus Sang-Jun Choi. An exhibition hall was added to the first floor of the building in 2009 through a donation of another alumnus, Seung-Hyun Park. The Biohousing Structure Laboratory and Unit Laboratory were built through construction expenses that had been allocated for the Biohousing Research Project.
The School of Architecture continues its effort to foster professional architects equipped with international
competitiveness, while endeavoring to continually evolve into the best school that puts knowledge and information into practice and leads the way in open education.
